TOAxMELT announce new inter-festival collaboration – TOA Berlin 2019

Tech Open Air, Europe’s largest interdisciplinary tech festival and Melt, one of Germany’s largest music festivals, are thrilled to announce their new collaboration: Melt will be an official partner of TOAxNight – TOA’s music program – and curate all content in Studio 1 of the Funkhaus, the former home of the broadcasting organisation in the GDR.

  • Tech Open Air and Melt Festival are starting a new collaboration in 2019
  • Melt Festival will be curating the Studio 1 music program at TOAxNight on July 3
  • TOA will curate cmd+N, a new content format at Melt Festival, on July 20
  • Instagram-filters creator Johanna Jaskowska and model Jada Sezer are the first confirmed speakers at cmd+N

In turn, TOA is responsible for the curation of cmd+N at Melt. The new format will present the fusion of tech, music, and art through exciting speakers such as Johanna Jaskowska, the creator of futuristic Instagram filters, and Jada Sezer, model and mental health advocate. In a special limited edition, fans of both festivals will be able to win a collaborative ticket that grants access to TOA and Melt this year.

On July 3, TOAxNight will recast the Funkhaus as an experimental tech playground that will be kicked-off by junk-E-cat. Melt is taking over Studio 1 with Emika, Parra for Cuva and KID SIMIUS performing, while the Forest Stage outside hosts acts such as Alice Rose, Wolf & Moon and The Good Night Circus. If electro is the vibe, Faisal Heimat of the Berlin Bass Collective, Stinhow of Intomyears and Meggy of Suol have got attendees covered. Music and art becomes a red herring to be followed throughout the festival with a hologram in Monom; the world’s largest sequencer, the RBMA 20; and a Battle of Sounds where Berlin MC, Abba Lang, will host six hand-picked musicians showing off their unique sounds.

“The collaboration between Melt and TOA is another great indicator of the interdisciplinary approach we’ve taken from the very beginning. Why should a music festival not curate a part of TOA? And why should we not share our expertise on stage at Melt? By working together we are driving forward the interconnectedness of various talents and encouraging communication and exchange that will, as the new format’s name indicates, lead to fantastic new developments and ideas,” says Niko Woischnik, founder of the Tech Open Air.

“We are delighted to work closely with an experienced partner to launch cmd+N, which will be the digital and innovative extension of Melt festival. With this, we want to open up a new space for our crowd to discover at Ferropolis: a space between tech talks and journeys through virtual worlds as well as independent video games. Vice versa it’s great to give our expertise back by hosting TOAxNight with the knowledge of our superb electronic booking,” adds Nina Nagele, Creative Director at Melt festival.

TOA19_melanie-riebeck-stripeTOA is coming together for the eighth time this year to celebrate the intersections of tech, art, music, science and more. Between 2.-5. July, more than 150 speakers (including Bruce Linton of Canopy Growth, Avid Larizadeh Duggan of Kobalt Music, and Jen Sander of Burning Man), 120 satellite events, and 20.000 participants (8.000 at the Funkhaus) are expected to attend. The event stretches across the entire Berlin with satellite events held by national and international companies, startups and scientific institutions.
